William James, American philosopher and psychologist was born in New York City, in 1842. William James attended private schools in the United States and Europe. He studied at Harvard University, and the Harvard Medical School, from which he received a degree in 1869. In 1880 he taught psychology and philosophy at Harvard. In the following years he lectured at Columbia University and the University of Oxford. He died in Chocorua, New Hampshire, in 1910. His epoch-making work, The Principles of Psychology, was published in 1890. One of his brothers was the novelist Henry James.
